NIH Biosketch & CV

I am a Psychiatrist at the University of California San Diego and the Veterans Affairs Health Care System San Diego.  We are studying how we can use neuroscience tools to better understand psychiatric diseases.  In particular, our key questions are:

(1) Can we develop brain imaging into an "EKG for the psychiatrist"?

(2) Can brain imaging be a tool to develop new treatments for psychiatric diseases?

(3) What processes go awry in people who succumb to addiction?

Research Interests:

• Decision-making and its dysfunction in individuals with psychiatric disorders

• Behavioral and brain activation patterns predicting

  • Individuals at risk for stimulant use and dependence

  • Relapse of people with stimulant dependence

• Functional magnetic resonance imaging as a tool to develop biomarkers for drug development

• Behavioral and brain activation pattern alterations in individuals with anxiety disorders

• Behavioral and brain activation pattern alterations in individuals exposed to combat (Operation Enduring Freedom / Operation Iraqi Freedom)

• The effect of alcohol on the brain systems underlying cognitive and emotional processing

• Measurement of locomotor behavior in humans to determine the effects of treatment in individuals with bipolar disorder
